Holistic Colonoscopy Q&A

What is a holistic colonoscopy?

A holistic colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses Nitronox™ (inhaled nitrous oxide) for sedation instead of intravenous (IV) sedatives like propofol, fentanyl, or versed. The holistic colonoscopy reduces pulmonary and cardiac risk factors related to IV sedatives.

You can also drive yourself home after a holistic colonoscopy.

The team at Blake GI Med Spa Services offers the holistic colonoscopy, and Dr. Blake has perfected the procedure by also improving the preparation process.

Instead of drinking the traditional laxative solution, the team uses the Colon Hydro Cleanse (CHC) to clean out your colon prior to the test to improve visibility during the procedure.

Am I a candidate for a holistic colonoscopy?

The experts at Blake GI Med Spa Services determine if you’re a candidate for a holistic colonoscopy after an evaluation. They perform the procedure to screen for colon cancer. All adults should start colon cancer screenings at age 45.

The colonoscopy is considered the “gold standard” test for colon cancer screening.

In addition to the holistic colonoscopy, the gastro med spa offers other colon cancer screening options, including the Cologuard® colon cancer test with a flexible sigmoidoscopy and a CT colonography.

How do I prepare for a holistic colonoscopy?

The team at Blake GI Med Spa Services provides specific instructions on what you need to do to prepare for your holistic colonoscopy, which may include following a clear liquid diet the day before the exam.

Instead of the at-home laxative, the team performs the CHC to clean out your colon at the office. CHC is a uniquely designed “high enema” with ultraviolet treated water that thoroughly cleans the colon in about 35-40 minutes.

The team requests you come to the office one hour before your scheduled holistic colonoscopy so they can perform the CHC. Their CHC is highly effective at cleaning out the colon, reducing your risk of having to repeat the colonoscopy due to retained fecal matter.

What happens during a holistic colonoscopy?

The holistic colonoscopy at Blake GI Med Spa Services takes 10-15 minutes. During the procedure, your gastroenterologist inserts a colonoscope — a thin flexible tube with a light and camera — in your anus and advances it through the entire length of your colon.

The colonoscope transmits live video of the lining of your colon to a computer screen that allows your gastroenterologist to examine the tissue and look for signs of abnormalities such as colon polyps. They take a biopsy of any abnormal tissue for further evaluation.

Colon polyps are benign growths; however, when left untreated, they may turn cancerous. Your gastroenterologist removes any colon polyps found during a holistic colonoscopy.
